The statue was huge, twice as large as life, and ominous in the tatters of fog that drifted across the lawn, Its dark wood was slimy with dampness and it had the appearance of a horror rising from the sea. The face had blind eyes and pointed ears, mouth half-open in a leering grin. Emily dropped her glance and saw that the legs were thick, the feet shaped in the form of a cloven hoof.

Josiah Sheridan chuckled. "What do you think of it, Emily?"

Emily stared at her uncle, puzzlement beginning to possess her mind. Suddenly she realized that his features were almost exactly like those of the statue!

What madness was this? She wanted to flee from this terrible place, but she looked again at her uncle, and realized that they were trapped! There could be no escape...
