Two unlikely crusaders, UCLA roommates years ago, are bent on proving that chess is a sport when they form The National Chess League (NCL). It s taken almost four decades for someone to pick up the mantle abruptly dropped by Bobby Fischer in 1972, following his great achievement. Not only did he earn the world championship, he scored a tremendous victory for the US in its Cold War with the USSR. But the NCL will have to overcome interference by a Russian gang, an unsportsmanlike ape, a cheating scandal and a blossoming Hollywood sex symbol. Fischer, before falling off the deep end, once said that chess was a game to be played with no compromise, to the kings .
