Of all the Woolthorns, old Hilary was the only one who still believed in the legend that was linked with the ruby pendant, but in the claustrophobic atmosphere of the old house deep among brooding moors it was difficult to ignore his conviction. Antonia's escape to the countryside swept her into a web of complex relationships. There was Hilary's sister Camilla, gruff but kindly, and occasional visits brought the ‘boys' to Dale End -- Clive was a maddening tease, but irresistibly charming, while Jay, dark-browed and moody, remained an enigma. But were any of the four Woolthorns quite as they seemed? And did it matter that, according to the legend, red-haired women like Antonia spelt doom for male Woolthorns? Of course it didn't. At least…it shouldn't have.
