Iris Roberts comes to New York to begin a new life, after recovering from a mental breakdown. Ashamed of her past, she lives alone, until the day she meets and falls in love with Stephen Grey. They marry and move into a large isolated mansion in the country.

The house, rumored to be haunted, is a spooky place, and Iris, susceptible to suggestion, is soon seeing "ghosts." Desperately afraid her illness is returning, she turns to her husband for help. But Stephen has suddenly become hostile. Iris struggles to retain her grip on reality. The danger is real, but is it from without or from within?
