It all began on the day that Janice Bernard had to leave her twin sister's wedding reception to attend to Emma Cooper's appendicitis attack. Since it was an emergency, Jan called on Dr. Mark Alston and the use of his “Whirlybird” to fly Emma to the county hospital. After Dr. Alston discovered that Jan knew how to fly a helicopter -- thanks to her flyer brother's instructions -- he asked her to assist him in his regular duties as well as when the helicopter was needed to bring out emergency cases from the may outlying areas of this part of southern Georgia.

Dark-haired Jan couldn't not have been more thrilled, for nursing and flying were two great loves. But before she assumed her duties, she was a witness to an automobile accident in which one bank robber was killed and the other -- a mere boy -- was seriously injured. She had heard from Emma's husband, Sheriff Frank Cooper, that the nearby Okefenokee Swamp was a favorite hideout for criminals, but this incident brought the unpleasant reality closer to home.

On Jan's first flying assignment to treat a wounded shrimp boater, she met Arnold Phillips, a sandy-haired, good-looking young man who told her a strange tale: the shrimper's near drowning had not been accidental, but had been intended for him. Arnold claimed to be a writer interested in local color, but his interest in Jan's story of the bank robbers seemed, to her, somewhat excessive…
