The Mystery of the Caramel Cat — Lynn Hall

When Willie finds a caramel colored cat amid the ruins of a crumbling plantation house. she is determined to discover its identity. Her search leads her back into history, to the days before the Civil War, to runaway slaves and the Underground Railroad. In a dream, Willie imagines herself to be the cat, and she discovers that two runaway slaves, hiding in the house, were betrayed by the cat's meow. Willie then understands why the cat haunts the house and she is able to free it from its feelings of guilt.
