She was special to Adam. He wanted to hold Joy in his arms and never let her go. He wanted to protect her from her old man. He wanted to claim her so Joey knew she was his even if they had to pick up the pieces of his broken heart afterwards. Joey was going to be broken but he was already broken. Adam had taken Joey's girl right out from under him. Not intentionally. It had just happened. He didn't think Joey would see it that way though.
