When nineteen-year-old Phyllis Hawkins learns of the marriage that her father arranged for her, relegating her to loveless, hopeless future, she flees her home on the farm and goes to the city to fend for herself. Past a score of dashed hopes and disappointments, she is able to make a better life for herself, overcoming the poverty and ignorance that once stalked her path.
