A freed slave, Violet Bowman enjoys life in Boston. But late one night two slaves appear at her door. Believing it is her Christian responsibility, she gives them a place to hide. Within a week, Violet is arrested for harboring fugitives.

When Sarah Adams learns of Violet's imprisonment she travels from Charlotte with her husband and baby to be with her friend during the trial. Working with an underground organization committed to freeing slaves, Sarah and David become part of a plot to rescue Violet.
