Shy and retiring but intelligent and pretty, Sylvie is invited to stay with her dead mother's cousin, Lady Carluke. She becomes very fond of Lady Carluke, but believes that her son, Edward, is a fortune-hunting ladykiller. Edward's current girlfriend, the beautiful, sophisticated Diantha, makes no secret of her jealousy of Edward's pretty cousin.
