When Brooklyn-raised Jenny is invited to spend a week in New Hampshire with Nicole, she's thrilled. Though Jenny doesn't know Nicole well, she finds her new friend funny and talented. And her family is sophisticated -- her parents insist on being called "Mac" and "Ellen." But when Jenny awakes one night and discovers Nicole's secret meeting with an older, wild-looking boy, she realizes how lithe she knows about Nicole -- or anyone in her family.

As the week goes by, Jenny begins to see a family life as endangered as the loons on the lake. And though she wants to help, she doesn't know if either can be saved.
