For five years Tricia had been very happy in her job as secretary at Second Chance, a home near Sydney for difficult boys. She liked her kindly old employer, Dr Woodville, and even if she did feel sometimes that the boys took advantage of his leniency, surely kindness, she thought, was more effective than overstrict supervision?
But Paul Hillman, the newly-appointed principal thought otherwise. What Second Chance needed was discipline - dispensed firmly and kindly, but discipline nevertheless and he was going to see that it got it. And if Tricia didn't approve - well that was just too bad.
