The quake that rocked downtown Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Hollywood has left Bel Air General battered but still standing, and the hospital throws open its doors to all the injured, regardless of wealth or fame. The facility is crowded far beyond capacity, testing the devotion and endurance of its doctors and nurses to the utmost.

As head nurse Hillary George fears for the life of her baby girl, born prematurely in the wake of the disaster, matriarch Laura Carlyle, a former nurse, joins the staff in caring for the earthquake victims, and a desperate search is mounted for Dr. Leon Kazinsky, the hospital's director of surgery, who is buried somewhere in the rubble.

Though the hospital has escaped total destruction, its future is still uncertain. Due to the damage the building has sustained, it faces the possibility of condemnation. In spite of the heroic efforts of everyone concerned, it appears that Bel Air General may be forced to close its doors forever....
