Publisher William Dawnay has received an unsolicited manuscript written from the point of view of his late first wife, and detailing events that led to her death in the Middle East twenty-two years previously. Dawnay, then a diplomat, and his wife Jill, were posted to al-Dawah but the claustrophobic outpost and the growing resentment of the natives soon began to tell on the couple. William grew disenchanted with Jill - but was he responsible for her death at the hands of a militant Islamic mob?
