Anne Cartwright had barely arrived in the astonishingly beautiful Hawaiian Islands when her
missionary husband died, leaving her penniless and alone thousands of miles from home. As woman, Anne cannot minister to the natives' but she can tend their bodies, so she takes a job as a nurse with Dr. Matthew Cabe. She little dreams that she will soon be tending members of King Kamehameha's royal court.
Matt has come to Hawaii looking for the reason behind his father's suicide and the failure of the elder Cabe's sugar plantation, now a success the hands of Edward Landre, Matt's late father's partner. When Landre is murdered, Matt's anger and accusations make him the prime suspect.
But Anne has glimpsed Matt's wounded soul under the coldness he shows the rest of the world, knows that the dedicated doctor could never kill. Now she must somehow prove it, even while King Kamehameha fights for the survival of the Hawaiian people and of Hawaii as an independent nation.
