Meggie Harper has always been very proud of her father, who has been mayor of their hometown, Pine Hollow, for the past twenty years. Now, for the first time, someone is challenging his bid for reelection. But Meggie isn't worried, she is sure her dad will win.

And then she meets the competition, Seth Mackey is young, confident, and so handsome he could be in the movies. Meggie knows she should hate this man, but her heart seems to have other ideas. Torn between loyalty to her father and her first-ever stirrings of love, Meggie is distraught. To complicate matters, her father thinks she should find her own apartment, and her best friend, John, has begun acting weird. It's as if everyone in Pine Hollow has been possessed by strange spirits! Meggie wishes she could just crawl under a rock until Election Day, it seems that no matter what she does, someone is going to get hurt. And then on Halloween night, something magical happens!
