Ensign Karen Shepard's ambition to make good as a Navy nurse and to prove herself as a woman in a position of authority was complicated by the growing affection she felt for Navy medical corpsman Don Holden. Since the rules forbade her as an officer from associating with enlisted personnel during off-duty hours, Karen was obliged to defy them in order to see Don. Both lived under the constant threat of possible discovery and disciplinary action.

Eventually, Don's future in medicine as well as Karen's own career were both placed in jeopardy, and she came to realize that she would have to choose between success in her profession and marriage to Don. Karen prayed she would have the wisdom and maturity to make the right decision.
