Under the roof of her bright, vivacious mother Elizabeth, and prosperous businessman Humphrey Woodman, Alicia Woodman's life should have been comfortable and happy.

However, when a shocking discovery turns her life upside down, Alicia finds herself alone and facing hardship. It is left to Polly Ford, the widow of a dock worker, to care for Alicia and give her the love she so desperately needs.

In a hypocritical society full of thin-lipped disapproval, Alicia learns that the human spirit can endure through adversity and love makes for the strongest relationships of all.
