Handsome Derek Davis, a promising but bored editor at a stuffy London publishing house, is unexpectedly sent to New York at the same time as he learns he could inherit a LOT of money if a mysterious legatee, perhaps also in New York, is not located within ninety days. Simultaneously, his artist girlfriend becomes involved in an attempted identity switch. What follows includes murder, arrests, venal lawyers, and a whole cast of entertaining characters, ranging from Welsh coalminers to Provencal innkeepers, all with their own desires and needs for love -- or money?
