Description
Lieutenant Shirley Andrews, young Air Force Flight Nurse, tried to leave behind, with her civilian clothes, the memory of a light-hearted kiss, and with it the humiliating memory of handsome Rick Chambers, Lieutenant, USAF.
As far as Rick was concerned, Shirley was a love thief, a siren in nurse's whites who had taken advantage of a helpless patient, stolen her fiancé, and then tosses away the prize when she tired of the game.
Now, through the capriciousness of fate and the demands of war, Shirley and Rick were thrown together in an Army hospital on a Pacific island -- Shirley as flight nurse on an ambulance plane and Rick as its pilot.
At first Shirley defended herself against Rick's sarcasm with a devil-may-care cloak of sophistication. But as the war progressed and each new casualty chipped away at the protective cloak, Rick began to see the kind of girl Shirley really was; he began to wonder if her had made a mistake.
On a bomb-torn tropical island, with a devastating war as a backdrop, two young and confused people slowly begin to know and understand one another, and to find what they have unconsciously wanted all along: each other.
