Description
As the war to end all wars was finally resolved, the German nation and its citizens were in complete disarray and the essentials for life were in short supply. Petr Gruber served and fought for this country. When the Armistice was signed in 1918, he was in northern France. The troops were without leadership. They didn't receive orders, they just wandered away from the scenes of their last battle to find their own way home. Entering the military, Petr left behind his parents, sisters, and his sweetheart, Anna. Recognizing the bad situation facing his country, on his long journey home, he decided when he got there; he would marry Anna and convince her that a better life awaited them if they immigrated to America. After immigrating to America, in an unusual circumstance, Petr, became a surrogate father for a woman who worked in his company. A boy, Andrew, was the result of that union. Andrew was both a scholar and an athlete who, upon graduation from high school, attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, class of 1941. In subsequent years, Anna had her first child. A boy they named John. Two tears later, a daughter, MaryAnn. Both children learned the language of their parents and attended the same grade and high schools as Andrew. When the Second World War began, Andrew was involved in major battles in Africa, Sicily, and Central Europe. When John received his high school diploma, he was immediately drafted into the army. MaryAnn volunteered at the local U.S.O. facility. John was wounded in the battle of Aachen. While recuperating at a field hospital he meets a young mother and her teenage daughter who were hiding in the basement of their partially bombed out farm house. The initial friendship turns serious. Once John returns to combat, he vows to find these women again. When hostilities end in Europe, the rumor that his Division would be sent to the Pacific Theater causes him to take some drastic steps. Andrew is one of the first to return home at the conclusion of warfare in the Pacific. No longer interested in having a career as a soldier, he embarks on a political career which further defines his character and moral makeup. MaryAnn and some of her friends become volunteers in Andrew's political campaign.
