It appears to have been an accident when old Henry Vane falls to his death from his office window, but Detective Sergeant "Bonny" Lee isn't satisfied it happened that way. A seemingly-senseless kidnapping appears to Lee to have a connection, though he cannot make it fit. Then there is a second death in the Vane family, and this time it is obviously murder.
