High up in the Italian mountains a gang of superbly trained deserters survive by attacking the supply convoys of both German and Allied armies. They are led by the mysterious and powerful Padrone -- Franz Kessler, a German.

Beccione, a newcomer to the gang, becomes increasingly intrigued by this complex man who some say is invasato -- possessed. Why else would a highly-cultured man, a brilliant soldier and champion of the peasants show exultation at the massacre of both German and Allied soldiers?
