Joe walked her as far as Gran's gate. "Listen," he said, "suppose I were to tell you I'm ready to break off with Judy .. ? Gosh, I never had a girl talk to me the way you just did. And I can't help wondering-"
"Wondering what?" she asked icily.
His grin was uncertain. "Would you have said all that .. if you didn't like me enough to want to stop me from making a mess of my life?"
She looked at him very coldly. "It's your children I'm concerned about. As for your life, if you want to make a mess of it, why should I care?" "That's what I was wondering," he said.
