Description
“Love makes a man afraid.”
Dr. Nat Casey remarked, as he reluctantly gave his consent for Nurse Ruby Compton to go on private duty.
This was no ordinary case for Nurse Ruby. The patient was a man she had once loved, and she seemed to have a crazy mixture of feelings toward him now -- tenderness, guilt and responsibility. She might decide that her patient needed her more than Dr. Nat did, and she might never come back to him.
There was another thing that worried Dr. Nat, too. The patient was a very unstable man, and he still wanted Ruby. If she told him she loved someone else, he might turn on her in a jealous rage -- and in his mental condition, there was no telling what violence he might resort to.
