When Lord Peregrine Sheldon, an intelligence officer for Wellington, is reported missing, presumed dead, his family and friends in England fear he is lost to them forever. But Sofia is as far from a society miss as one could hope to find. She fights with the partisans, wears a gentleman's attire and firmly knows her own mind. As she and Perry grow closer, their feelings for each other grow stronger too. Perry is finally able to declare his feelings when his memory and sight return. But they are from different worlds - Sofia feels trapped by the conventions and rules of Perry's world and Perry believes Sofia will never settle in England after her wild and rebellious life in Spain.
