Isolated high in the Sierras, removed from the main highway, stood a huge pile of black masonry known as Castle Midnight. Since it was reputed to be haunted, it was a white elephant for which there had been no buyers and few offers. Therefore, the agent was glad to rent it, even on a short-term lease, to playboy Tom Houston, who was intent on spending his modest inheritance on the castle in the hope of impressing the wealthy Englishwoman be hoped to marry.

Needing a household staff and someone to supervise them, Tom called on his childhood friend Beverly Nichols, never dreaming that the task would be doubly difficult for her because she was in love with him. But for Beverly, even the problem of concealing her feelings for Tom was overshadowed by more dire happenings: lights which went out by themselves, movements where there were no people, a suit of armor that roamed around, unexplained accidents…and murder!
