Karen Locke joked about her hasty marriage, but she was far from being happy and secure. Although she loved her husband deeply, there was something vaguely forbidding in his manner, something frightening.

She thought her misgivings would evaporate when she moved to beautiful Locke Manor. But the old house seemed to harbor some terrible secret that widened the gulf between them. It was as if something evil in the house was gradually possessing her husband and was determined to make her its next victim. She felt like a child who needed help, but there was no one to turn to, only the whispering corridors and the lurking shadows.
