Description
In a small Midland town in the nineteenth century, four girls are reared by their widowed father. There is Faith, eager for independence and a home of her own; Hope, beautiful but selfish; Charity, clever and compassionate, who seeks fulfilment in the Crimea; and finally Mercy, the youngest and the happiest, finding joy in the smallest, simplest things. In their lives the girls feel happiness and sorrow, but lives that are unfolding will go on, despite everything.
