To Sheriff Scott Wagoner it seemed that his Chief Deputy, Jeff Mays, had lost interest in hunting the formidable Yerby gang, but that was not the case. For Mirabelle Drummond's sake, young Jeff was taking a very unorthodox course in fighting the Yerby outfit. Shortly after a stranger had shown a special interest in the Yerby affair, Jeff shocked the Sheriff by handing in his badge. Bullets emptied many saddles, and a few reputations also died in the desperate clashes which took place before Jeff felt justified in wearing a badge again.
