Gather the Wind — Daphne De Jong

A romance largely set in early New Zealand, although it does sweep across the world, from England to the Arctic, North America, the Pacific and Australia. It is the story of the strong but flawed Captain Joss, whose life among the sealers and whalers is one of brutal shipboard discipline and harsh warfare.
