Mittens — Clare Turlay Newberry

Any child---and any grown-up cat lover as well---will adore Mittens, a sweet tabby kitten, as much as Richard does. Richard has lots of fun feeding his new kitten and watching him play, but just a few days after he brings Mittens home, the kitten mysteriously disappears. Neighbors respond to Richard's newspaper advertisement about the lost kitten but have some surprising ideas about what little Mittens looks like. Will Richard ever find his beloved kitten? During this trying day, Richard learns the importance of patience and determination.
