Her boyfriend Jason Hunter launches a trek to the Alps frontier to find his fortune, and she's compelled to follow, despite evidence that another pandemic might be breaking out.A second narrative thread brings us back to 2026, when Emma Wallace Blair first arrives in Edinburgh after escaping the collapsing New York City. The Barmy Fever has also infected the U.K. This second path of the novel follows Emma Blair as she makes her way to the north of Scotland and Isle Of Skye, and first begins to grapple with loneliness, survival, and the gain and loss of comrades. The two narratives flow like parallel rivers, following the nascent romances, perilous ordeals, and kindred journeys of both mother and daughter.
