Max Ewing escaped from Fort Jefferson, escaped from the lonely fortress on the dry Tortugas, from a place where escape was impossible. But this experience was as nothing to what he faced when he came within sight of home. For he could not escape his feelings, the wrath and gall that drove him to make the prison break and sail the long weary miles in an unseaworthy boat.
