Flag to Flag takes place during the War of 1812, where the reader is eyewitness, through the

main character, of the conquest by the British of Washington DC. In Their Last Hope, the main

characters meet Charles "Chinese" Gordon and later experience the horrors of the fall of

Khartum. These two novels were originally serialized in 1907 and 1909.
