These words still thrilled Chris Roman -- still reminded him of the vow he had made as a little boy that someday he too would help people as the doctors in the clinic had helped his father.

After years of study and hard work, Doctor Christopher Roman was a staff member at Bethesda Hospital. But there his dream ended.

For the clinic was a thing of the past, and Bethesda no longer was the small, chartable hospital that he remembered. It had become a medical center, superbly staffed, magnificently equipped, supremely directed, performing medical miracles -- but only for a fee.
