Born in New York City, December 12, 1924, Ed Koch left college to serve in the Army during WWII. He returned to the City College of New York and New York University, where he earned his law degree. He was elected to the City Council in 1967, and Congress in 1969. A Democrat, Koch was mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1990, and is largely credited with saving the city from bankruptcy.
Ed Koch served as Democratic mayor of New York (1978-1990), and his re-election (1981) was partly due to his success in handling New York's financial problems and saving the city from bankruptcy. In 1982 he lost a bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination to Mario Cuomo. Defeated as Democratic candidate for mayor in 1989 by David Dinkins, he returned to practice law with Robinson, Silverman, Pearce, Aronsohn & Bowman. A colorful and outspoken character, he also found a place in the news media as a TV talk show host and newspaper columnist.
Koch authored several books including His Eminence and Hizzoner (1989, with John Cardinal O'Connor) and All the Best, Letters from a Feisty Mayor (1990).
