September, 1943. As the second year of World War II draws to a close, h residents of the small town of Elderberry, Georgia, are doing their best to support the war effort. The upcoming war bond rally -- complete with pageant and parade -- has everyone brimming with excitement, including the no-nonsense Miss Dimple Kilpatrick, who has taught the town's first graders for decades, and fellow teachers Charlie Carr and her best friend, Annie.
But when Annie discovers a skeleton during a school field trip and then Buddy Oglesby -- who helped plan the rally -- disappears along with the war bond money, it's clear that something is amiss. "If Miss Dimple can't get to the bottom of it, I don't know who can," Annie declares, as Miss Dimple accepts the challenge to put things right.
