It should have been a time of supreme happiness for strawberry-blonde Kelly Townsend. After a separation of over one year, she was flying to Honolulu to be united with Dr. Jeff Langley, a resident in pediatrics at Sunshine Hospital on Waikiki Beach. But a mistake she had made in the Chicago hospital before leaving for Hawaii weighed heavily on her, clouding her joy. Somehow--try though she had, she couldn't understand how it had happened--the thermostat in the preemie nursery was set far too loo, endangering the life of an infant, while Kelly was on duty. Heartsick, she vowed never again to work with infants, though she dearly loved them.

When her plane crashed after takeoff in San Francisco, Kelly made an exception. Tiny Pikaki Sanford, whose parents had befriended Kelly on the first leg of the journey from Chicago, needed the care of a skilled nurse, and Kelly could not bear to refuse Scott Sanford. Petite Nurse Pamela Marsh took Kelly under her wing at Golden Gate Hospital, offering encouragement and sympathy when Kelly confided in her. When little Kaki was old enough to travel, both nurses accompanied her to Honolulu, and Pamela too joined the staff of Sunshine Hospital.

Now that she and Jeff were finally together again, Kelly encountered an inexplicable reluctance to reveal to him the story of her mistake in Chicago. She was adamant, however, about her refusal to work in the nursery at Sunshine, even though her forfeiting the job left a clear field to Rose Kobashi, a lovely native nurse with more than a casual interest in Jeff.
