Mikaela, Shane, and Amy Cooper live in a scenic beach town on the Oregon Coast called Cannon Beach. Sixty miles offshore is a stretch of the 600-mile long mega-thrust earthquake and tsunami region called the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ).It's been 17 years since their survival ordeal west of Mount Rainier. Amy is now 22 y.o. and teaches in an elementary school, just a half mile from the sea. 8 y.o. sister Shauna attends the school. The CSZ last erupted and battered the West coast with tsunamis in 1700, more than 300 years ago. But the Zone averages a mega-thrust earthquake, measuring at least 8.5 on the Richter Scale, about every 230 years, according to Tony Jonze, a geologist and surfing buddy of Shane's.Cannon Beach and the rest of the Oregon coast are overdue for the bigger one. The tiny community of 1,100 and its tourist crowds have problems much closer to home, however, including the disappearance of Gail Davies. She was a former dancer on the Vegas Strip who works for Jonze's girlfriend Jodie. Gail's friend Evelyn Gilroy, who was also partying at the Pelican Brew on Gail's last night, has also gone missing.A famous big wave surfer who has a drug-dealer past, Shred Thurston, is one of the suspects.Stephen Graves, a black detective who works the Portland Metro beat, is brought in to investigate. He's originally from the projects in Roxbury, Mass., once worked for the LAPD. and is a whiz with crime databases and DNA science. The evidence also implicates a loan shark Gail got involved with in Vegas, until Graves's investigation suggests the crime spree might involve more than one murder. This mashup of dystopian adventure and detective thriller follows our protagonists as they cope with crime and the looming threat of natural disaster.
