The epic love story first begun in "Destiny Lies Waiting" continues as Denys Woodville and the dashing knight Valentine Starbury are thrust into a nightmare world of plotting and intrigue at the court of Edward IV.

Denys should be content with her life as ward to the Queen, but she resents feeling like a pawn on a chessboard all the time. Her bid for independence brings her into ever more danger as she continues to search for her lost family, but instead finds only a trail of murder, mayhem and destruction.

Denys also seeks the love of Valentine, betrothed to her due to his loyalty to the Yorkist king Edward IV, eager for any ally to keep his tenuous hold on the crown many say he has stolen and does not deserve.

Denys loves her king and country and the Yorkist cause, but wants more than a just a white rose withering in a politically expedient marriage. Can such an ambitious knight as Valentine ever truly love her? His heated kisses and caresses tell her one thing, but in a world where York and Lancaster are constantly at odds and all hunger for power, the only thing she feels certain of is betrayal by the one man whom she should be able to trust: her own husband.

An unexpected death leads the way for her childhood friend Richard of Gloucester to win all for the Yorkist cause, but the upstart Henry of Richmond has great plans for his own family-not that of the red rose of Lancaster, but a new house on the rise, the house of Tudor.

As Denys draws closer to discovering her real identity at last, the line between friend and foe has never been more blurry. One false step could mean certain death. Is the truth about her parentage really worth sacrificing everything for: friendship, love, even her own marriage?

Valentine's love, loyalty, and very life hang in the balance as the white and red roses of York and Lancaster battle for the throne at a little place in the north called Bosworth Field. Can Valentine remain faithful to King, country, and wife when he discovers the real identity of the woman he has married? Or will their love too become nothing more than a casualty on the battlefield?
