Gwen Cunningham was proud of the position she held with the Tomlinson radio station. For while the station was small, it had standards of public service; it stood for good music, unblased presentation of the news, and honest advertising. Therefore the news that the owner was planning to sell the station to the great Wriest Pacific Coast Broadcasting System, which was more interested in profits than in community service, was a shock to Gwen.

Even more of a shock was the appearance of Floyd Pearson to arrange the sale for Wriest. For when they had both been in college Gwen had been in love with Floyd. And although she now resented his business methods as well as his intrusion into her personal life, he still had the power to stir her when they met away from the station, under a weeping willow tree.
