Lemuel and Gabriel are identical twin great spotted woodpeckers whose early lives are not as settled and comfortable as they might be. Mammy and Pappy Pecker go their separate ways for various reasons, each taking one of their sons with them.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse until Amy, a young tawny owl, steps in to help.
