The year is 1833 and, following the return of an empty carriage, Elizabeth Darmon begins a harrowing odyssey that takes her across British North America in search of her missing family. Caught in a web of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder, the English woman uncovers a plot by a radical element of Reformers, called The Patriotes, who are determined to see Canada free of England's rule. Most intriguing for Elizabeth, however, is the realization that another woman is impersonating her -- but why and, more importantly, will the imitator's clandestine efforts squelch all hope of Elizabeth finding the family she once cherished?

Elizabeth's brother-in-law, Charles Bagwell, is also a victim of the rebellion, but in a different way. Blinded by a loss of memory after the attack on his family, he is recruited by The Patriotes and tricked into securing the help of Americans, who are stock-piling arms at covert hunting lodges throughout the United States. Family members unwittingly cross paths in their attempts to find one another and, consequently, are thrown into a tumultuous rein of terror that threatens to tear a family and a country apart.
