Why did the spirit of Thalia Fairleigh haunt the house she had come to as a bride? Amanda didn't know...but she did know her own love for Craig Fairleigh was doomed as long as his dead wife walked between them...

Journey to the Unknown...

The day of her father's funeral, Amanda Latham faced the unhappy prospect of traveling to a strange city to earn her living. At 17, with no particular experience, orphaned Amanda knew she was lucky to have been hired by Craig Fairleigh, an attractive young widower who needed a governess of his little boy. Still, the idea of boarding an Erie Canal packet boat, and voyaging 61 miles to Syracuse, filled Amanda--who had never been away from home before--with anxiety. The sight of the turreted, gabled house on the bank of the canal that was her destination added to her uneasiness. And the icy reception she received from Mrs. Hamilton, the housekeeper, who had adored the late Mrs. Fairleigh and saw lovely Amanda as a "rival" for her. But human jealousy was something Amanda could understand and deal with. The vengeful ghost of Thalia Farleigh was quite a different--and terrifying--proposition...

MIDNIGHT VISITOR...

The night was still and the sound of an approaching train seemed louder than usual. Mr. Fairleigh jumped up. "Here comes the midnight train," he said. "I've kept you from your beauty sleep, Amanda. Forgive me."
"It doesn't matter," I said.
I started to walk over to the stairs when suddenly a bright light appeared at the top. As I watched, the figure of a very beautiful woman formed. In her arms she held a bridal bouquet. There was a veil over her face and her dress was a bridal gown. But it was black. She began to float down the stairs toward us...
"Thalia!" Mr. Fairleigh cried. "My God! Thalia!"
We stood side by side, as if turned to stone, while the misty form of Thalia Fairleigh floated down the stairs toward us...
