The ancient Mayan calendar, accurate for more than 5,000 years, comes to an end on December 21, 2012. Even among the Maya, there is disagreement as to what the end of the era will bring. Some expect the birth of their god-king, Kukulcan. Some expect the end of the world.

Four days before the winter solstice that signals the end of the calendar, events that could go either way are taking place. In the Middle East, the demon Vhorrdak schemes to get a nuclear weapon into the hands of Iran. At the same time, a rebel Mayan group in the Yucatan peninsula awaiting the birth of Kukulcan abducts a pregnant woman and her husband, Rebekah and Jonas Sagiev, in an attempt to make the prophecy come true. They are lead by University of Mexico scholar Manuel Patcanul and his sister Diega. Another portent, the Comet Quetzalcoatl, reaches its zenith over the skies of Cancun, bringing to Mexico a curious assortment of internationals who also seek the birth of a king. Vhorrdak's man Raz Uris is also in Mexico seeking the pregnant woman on Vhorrdak's orders to kill the baby at the moment of birth. Legends claim it is the only time the king will be vulnerable.

Before long, a final Mayan prophecy appears on the wall within the Pyramid of Kukulcan, triggered by Rebekah's innocent actions. It reveals the location of the long-lost Book of the Thirteen Gods, which contains details for the end of the era. All parties have reasons to want the Book for their own purposes. Since the prophecy states it can only be found ‘by the favored father's hand,' Jonas becomes a pawn in both the battle for the birth of the king and the search for the Book.

There is one final catch only Manuel and Diega know--two human sacrifices are required for the final prophecy to come true. With time running out before the solstice and the fate of the world in the balance, Rebekah and Jonas want nothing more than to keep their son's birth from fulfilling the prophecy. Others will do anything to make the king's birth a reality--one of them for the prophesied moment of vulnerability when he can kill the king.
