Felicia and Robin are at Richmond Palace for Robin's investiture as a knight for services to the crown. While awaiting the king's pleasure, Felicia and Robin mix with the artists in residence waiting to paint their patrons in honour of their investiture. Among the assembled artists are a couple of old friends, and Felicia enlists their aid when investigating some abuses of one of the apprentices. Felicia and Robin are rudely awakened by one of Wolsey's agents, to investigate when one of the artists is murdered in his chamber. Felicia and Robin must try to find a motive, and sift through those proposed by others, including a potential political motive around the artist's current work. A lover's tiff is proposed by another artist, and when a certain item is missing, theft might be the simplest motive of all As the pair struggle with the murderous puzzle the court has its own amusements on offer; a Corpus Christi play, and jousting and tennis, in both of which Robin is persuaded to pit his luck against Henry! As a gesture of perhaps misplaced favour, the king decrees that Felicia and Robin shall marry the next day. Felicia and Robin's wedding celebrations are interrupted by another corpse …
