Liz Sewell didn't want to believe one of her friends on Swan's Neck was a murderer. Much easier to blame the stranger in their midst, Stuart Duff...except that no stranger could have known them all so dangerously well...

The Hunted…

The series of tragedies at Swan's Neck that Labor Day week began on Sunday, with the death of Liz Sewell's mother from a heart attack. That night Jim Hersey's wife reported him missing and the next day his drowned body was recovered from the inlet. On Thursday, returning to the summer shore colony after her mother's funeral, Liz picked up a stranger on the road … Stuart Duff … who was looking for her sister. They found her together … murdered … the body hidden in the brush on a shuttered estate. That was when Liz first began to suspect a connection linking the three tragedies. Because Stuart insisted his sister had come to the Neck to see Jim Hersey, yet no one in the colony would admit they'd never seen or heard of her! Someone was lying, but who was it? Searching for the answer, Liz didn't realize she already had it … until suddenly she found herself stalked like an animal by a desperate killer!

HIDE AND SEEK...
Gyp bounded ahead, barking joyfully, and tunneled into the forbidding undergrowth.
"I'm going after him," Stuart Duff said, still clutching the lady's green shoe the dog had found. He got down on all fours and started crawling.
A flash of sanity warned me: Liz this could be a trick! What do you know about this man? Why on earth should you follow him into this deserted place? But I had seen his stricken face and heard the emotion in his voice. I knelt and crept after him.
That was how we came upon the body. On our hands and knees like children playing. Only, it was a grim game we had started...and the prize was a corpse!
