In 1876, the American centennial, Alcott published this collection of nine short stories.  The title refers to two of them:  “Silver Pitchers,” in which three popular young women take an unpopular stance against alcohol, and “Independence,” in which two young lovers, John and Dolly, must chart their own course despite the interference of their families.
