Robin Lalanne was an incurable romantic. She was nearly obsessed by the story of how her mother's father and her father's mother had once loved each other only to be torn apart before their marriage could take place. Anthony Crespi had married his housekeeper, and Signet had kept her promise to the man to whom she had originally been betrothed. Their star-crossed romance later produced an ironic turn when Anthony's daughter met and fell in love with a struggling young pianist who turned out to be Signet's son. So enraged was Anthony at their marriage that he banished his daughter from his house, and consequently Robin never knew her grandfather.

So it came as a shock mingled with pleasure when Anthony Crespi sent for the granddaughter he had ignored for twenty-two years. Robin's father had just suffered a fatal heart attack--her mother had died years before--and she was virtually alone in the world except for Anthony and for Signet, now living out her widowed years in her native Canada. And what better way for Robin to fulfill her dream of love by trying to reunite Anthony and Signet than to accept his offer to come to California?

The tragedies of old become intertwined with the mixed blessings of the present as Robin seeks to rekindle an old love and at the same time finds for herself the happiness she has long dreamed of.
